Deborra Stewart-Pettengill
I make sculptures, drawings and paintings. Although I work with a variety of materials, clay and concrete are my preferred sculpture materials, and the human figure is a compelling subject for a large portion of this work.

Formed from concrete, clay, and a myriad of mosaic materials, the Mantra Series explores totemic form and surface pattern. Influenced by decorative patterns from ethnic cultures, these pieces deal with cultural studies of childhood in a contemporary world.
Earlier work in the Portrait Series merges the forms of figure and shrine. Created from oil painted porcelain, this body of work explores innocence and imagination in an allegorical form.

Inspired by the pattern studies in my sculptures, I began the drawings and paintings in Meditations. These pieces focus on an exploration of natural patterns, structures, layers, and color.
My most recent drawings, Thirty in Thirty, continue the exploration of structures and patterns begun in Meditations.
